When we designed our daughter’s nursery (our first born), we went all out. We did a four-wall mural of a tropical island and undersea world (you could say this was the beginning of us branching into baby design). We kept the furniture simple, but really poured ourselves into the design. We spent many Saturday afternoons painting coral and tropical fish, I made fabric flowers and trees for the island, I made a fabric sun, and my husband made seagull book-shelves.
We get a lot of questions about nursery designing and what’s “in”. Luckily, you can find a lot of inspiration, tips, and tools to help online – but it’s fun to get out to get inspired too.
Get Inspired
I came across a nursery design decorating page on the HGTV site, and one tip from designer Shari Hiller really stood out:
“We started the nursery just like we do any room we are decorating, with an inspiration piece. In a bedroom, often times the inspiration comes from the bedding..”
So you need to get inspired! But how? I’m feeling inspired by the sweet floral pattern on the vintage dish shown to the right.
Here are some more ideas:
- Cookie Magazines Nesting Blog has lots of examples and pieces that might inspire you.
- Get out!!! Visit antique shops and look at classic toys and vintage prints. Visit museums, furniture stores, swap meets, art galleries, baby shops (there are a lot of custom nursery design shops out there now too!)
- Soak in some nature and take note of what colors appeal to you.
- Read some of the adult design magazines to see what appeals to you – think about how you can scale the concept down and make it work in a nursery.
- Once you have your inspiration piece, select your color scheme based on that piece (this is why people often start with bedding, or a cool pillow or fabric they find – a theme and color scheme comes pre-selected).
Start Designing
I found this cool online tool you can use to design the floorplan for your nursery, and it’s free!! You might want to sketch out a few ideas on paper first and then sit down to plug them and see what you really think.
Start with the paint colors – it’s a good idea to put the paint swatches on the wall and see how you like the color (it will look different depending on lighting and time of day).
Then, just GO for it and have fun!! Your baby will love it no matter what!

I’m on a personal crusade to reduce how many petroleum-based
products we use in our house. Since plastic is petroleum-based, using reusable water bottles will help us reduce how many plastic bottles we use in this house. My husband coaches, so he needs portable water, which has caused us to use way too many plastic bottles in the past. No more – we’re cool now. I purchased the whole family re-usable water bottles this week (I don’t know what took us so long). Mine is a cool green and it couldn’t be more timely – it’s pushing a hundred degrees here in Southern California today.

I came across THIS article from CNN.com / Partenting.com about changing your little one’s bad habits. Since a lot of our customers and readers are soon-to-be parents or new parents, I thought it might be some timely advice as far as curbing the habits before they start. We escaped a couple of these bad habits with our own children, but we’re definitely working on breaking a couple of them too.
