Today’s ‘make life easier’ tip is a time-saver and boredom cure - art projects at your kids’ fingertips. Our kids love doing projects. I finally hit on a really great art-supply-tool that keeps us all a little happier; the art box. I put all of the kids’ art supplies into one box that they could reach on their own. I separate art supply by type w/ little boxes inside of a bigger box (all plastic). The big box holds the paper and the smaller boxes.
The art box saves me time because the kids can get their art project stuff together themselves - which gives the kids a sense of independence, a great creative outlet, and something to do!!
Your art box can work for babies too - just make sure it’s kept in the same spot, full of age-appropriate items, and that it is always within reach. The items in the box can be simple for babies, such as a couple of artsy flip books and a magna doodle-type pad. Then, as your baby grows into a toddler and beyond, you can add on crayons, paper, watercolors, paint cups, paint brushes, scissors, and glue-sticks - all kinds of fun stuff.
You could even make a fun family project out of decorating the art box!

I’m a big fan of color. Color sets moods and lifts spirits. This summer, I’ve been especially inspired by bright summer flowers. Maybe a few of these flower pictures can inspire your nursery design ideas, the colors you choose to surround your baby in / with, and your own personal style and accessory choices. Bright bold colors can brighten your day, provide the right amount of lift to an otherwise simple outfit, and stimulate your babies sense of sight. Flowers always provide fresh scents and big smiles. Flowers are a great source of Wao(TM) inspiration for your life. Enjoy and be inspired!
Summer floral colors and their meaning
The snapdragons are a blend of gorgeous deep burgondy, bright golds and pale yellows, and a soft creamy white. This is a complete naturally occuring color scheme that is happy, uplifting, playful, and innocent:
*gold / yellow - Golds and yellows are the colors of hope and happiness. Incredibly uplifting, they are warm colors. In feng shui, yellow is used to increase self-esteem, health, and general joy; yellows are widely recommended for children’s rooms.
*white / cream - whites represent innocence, purity, and cleanliness. White touches in a room provides tranquility and a nice contrast to brighter colors (such as fuchsia). In feng shui, white is the ulitimate color and is recommended for any room. It helps clarification and provides tranquility, and it’s especially good for meditation - which can be as simple as the time spent rocking your newborn to sleep, humming lullabyes.
* blues - clear skies, refreshment, healing. The sunflowers in the picture to the right look gorgeous against the blue sky backdrop because it’s a common color combination, and it’s one that is often used in nursery designs. In feng shui, light blues represent harmony and gentle growth. Light blue in a nursery will be relaxing and soothing, promoting good sleep patterns.
*burgundy / fuchsia / pink - Shades of pink convey sweetness and playfulness. In the US, Pink is widely accepted as THE color of little girls. It’s a feminine color. The deeper shades, such as the burgundy add strength. In feng shui, pink is the LOVE color and is recommended for little girls rooms.
The image to the left, the pinks w/ black background and touches of white, directly reflects a color scheme that I am currently using in design. In fact, my own daughter has her “Name in Brights” in the zebra minky w/ the pink plush.
…and skip the games.
I recently attended my sister-in-law’s baby shower, where it was decided mid-way through to just skip the games. A “guess how many cotton balls are in the baby bottle” game was out on the table when the shower started, but I’d bet only half the guests filled out the cards or even noticed.
The shower was heavy on theme (it was beautiful!), a ton of fun, and game-free! When the whispers started circulating after social-snack time that maybe we should just “skip the games”, it was as if the whole party heaved a collective sigh of relief.
After the big decision, almost everyone had some comment about “dreading the games” . Since the idea of co-ed showers is spreading, it seems only natural to me that baby shower games will fall by the wayside.
My sister-in-law did have a woman’s only shower, which was nice - really, really nice actually. All of us women got to do what we truly enjoy, chit-chatting and catching up, and then oooing and awwing over cute itsy bitsy baby things.
