The b*Fab b*Green eco-tip for January is one aimed at lessening our dependence on oil by using petroleum-free laundry detergents. I’ve discovered that locating petroleum-free laundry detergents is not the easiest thing in the world, but I have learned (thanks to the wonderful women on the mommieswithstyle.com message boards) that Seventh Generation laundry detergents are petroleum-free.
In fact, one statement on the Seventh Generation website is:
If every household in the US replaced one box of petroleum-based powder laundry detergent with our [Seventh Generation] vegetable-based product, we could save 98,000 barrels of oil…enough to heat /cool 5500 U.S. homes for a year!
They have petroleum-free dish soap also:
If every U.S. household replaced one bottle of petroleum-based dish dishwashing liqued with our [Seventh Generation] plant-based product, we could save 81,000 barrels of oil.
The above stats are based on replacing just one box of laundry detergent in the next year and one bottle of dish detergent in the next year. That’s REALLY not hard for us to do. I’ve heard that Seventh Generation is also available at Trader Joe’s, but I haven’t verified that information yet.
