This is a random “parenting” post, but I can’t help it. This topic popped into my mind as I was looking at pictures a friend sent of her 10 month old. And her 10 month old has a beautiful beaming little face - and an orange nose. And the reason this matters to me is because I thought I was going to have a heart attack when my own daughter’s nose starting turning orange around the same age.
At first, I tried to wipe it off.
Each day it got brighter orange. I grew concerned enough to call the doctor. I had no clue what it could be! What was happening? What is it?!? Simple really - she was getting too much beta-carotene (carrots) from her baby foods. The doctor said to “lighten up on the carrots, it’ll go away”. It’s nothing to be worried about - especially once your baby starts eating “real” food and is weaned off of the mushy baby foods.
It isn’t until you try to “lay off the carrots” a little bit that you find out just how much beta-carotene is in baby food. It’s a flavor babies love, so a lot of baby food is flavored with it.
I can’t help by smile every time I see a pic of a cute little orange-nosed baby. As a first time mom, it really wierded me out, I won’t lie to you. I was much relieved to find out that it’s just a little too much of a good thing.
