Yesterday was a bright sunny day here in San Diego, and we took a bunch of old bread to the local lakes to feed the ducks. It was so incredibly brilliant and relaxing. We lucked into the right time of day and a quiet enough day that the ducks were starving. The ducks were happy to see the kids and the low murmur of their quacking, coupled with a summer coastal breeze, made it especially relaxing.
As we stood there, under the shade of a tree, trying to convince our son to throw smaller pieces, I took a deep breath and realized we don’t do this sort of stuff enough. The beginning of summer is a good time to remind ourselves to take a few extra moments at the end of the day to sit on the porch and enjoy the onset of evening, to turn the sprinklers on for the kids, to do simple family activities. Such simple activities can be brief and not all time-consuming, but can be completely rejuvenating.
The other day we bought great big bunches of strawberries and blueberries, and every time I make a bowl of the fruit for my kids, I can’t help but feel inspired to make a berry pie. It’s something I’ve never tried, but the rich colors of those summer-ripened berries draw me in. Not to mention it feels so good give the kids foods that are really tasty and really good for them.
I find that taking small moments to treat my kids to the finer things in life, such as summer berries and feeding the ducks, ends up being a treat for me - every single time. Those moments take me back to my childhood, take me out of my daily hassles and stresses, and create memories which will carry me through stressful times. I hope to remind myself that I need this sort of refreshment every day. It makes for a happy soul, a whole family full of happy souls.
