It’s been hot everywhere we’ve been since the first day of summer and protecting our kids from the sun has become a never-ending battle of ours. I love the new spray sunscreens, and they have versions made specifically for babies. (7/15 - Update: Make sure you read directions carefully - many sunscreens are not appropriate for infants, and many doctors recommend you don’t put sunscreen on infants under a certain age). Even with spraying it on my hand and rubbing it on my little bop’s precious little faces, I never feel like I get enough coverage on their faces.
Hats are great, but keeping hats on is another thing altogether. Our kids are getting better about it, but they still end up with a lot of time in the sun. Our kids love the outdoors and even though we keep our kids indoors (as much as possible) during the mid-day hours, they love to be outside. We have a couple of umbrellas up outside, and it’s been hot enough to make the kids retreat beneath the umbrella shade, which is good. Today, they spent a lot of time playing under the picnic table.
Here are some things we do to help our kids beat the heat and the harmful effects of the rays:
- Cover the kids in sunscreen even before car trips
- Insist on hats and sunscreen before they head outdoors
- Give them lots of ice water, and insist they drink some
- Make fruit juice popsicles
- Keep them inside between 11am - 3pm
- Provide a lot of shade outdoors
- Try to remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours
- Sunglasses are great when they keep them on
Try to remember to take a blanket with you, even on hot days. It can provide a ton of shade when thrown over an open stroller, and a great place to sit in the shade at the park.
Soon, it will be easy to buy clothing with sunscreen built-in. You’ll be able to get clothing that is naturally resistent to the harmful UVA and UVB rays we’re all so desperately hiding from these days. In the meantime, I think I’ll seek out a good organic baby products company that carries a good organic baby sunscreen; I’d like to offer quality organic baby skin products through babyfabulous.com. If anyone has recommendations for baby skin products, we’d love to hear them! Email us at info@babyfabulous.com with your ideas.
